*Companies that chooses to use bismuth oxychloride do so because it is a cheap mineral and a great filler. Chemically, it resembles arsenic and antimony. Bismuth have light refractive and very high sheen properties. It is this high sheen that causes mineral makeup to appear 'shiny', which can magnify fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the buffing action required to achieve the necessary skin adhesion with bismuth can cause itching and redness.
